There are many things that the new iPhone does well but one of those things does NOT include managing the Contact list from the phone directly.

I sync my Contact app with gMail’s contacts. This was easy to set up but I was unable to place existing contacts into a group. Creating a new group is possible as is creating a new contact inside a group.

So in order to manage my contacts from Windows, I had to take the following steps.

1. Create a new MobileMe account. This is a free trial for the first 60 days.

2. Sync my contacts in MobileMe with my gMail account.

3. Open Windows address book and delete the one address that was present there.

4. Log out of MobileMe.

5. Start iTunes and change the sync options for Contacts to the Windows address book and Sync. When prompted, I had the iphone overwrite the address book on the computer.

It took me a couple of tries to make it work, but now I can create, edit and delete groups from Windows and it is reflected on the iPhone. Yeah!

Here is a screen shot I took of my iPhone after learning how to take screen shots.
